The History Of Muay-Thai
The History Of Muay-Thai

1.Pradal Serey

Pradal Serey (Khmer Boxing) Cambodians's (Kmers)national sport.Pradal Serey means "free fighting".
Pradal Serey historically precedes Muay Thai. This is well recorded left behind by early Khmers. Much of the writing on this ancient Khmer art has been destroyed and adopted by the invading Thai armies and governing institutions during the rise of the Thais in the 13th century and claiming it their own.
Campuchea (Cambodia) has suffered decades of destructions.Polpot (Red Kmer)certainly did not help with his killing fields. All form of knowledge was destroyed.
The ancient Muay Thai archives still displayed at the Thai national museum show 11th century Kmer fighters in Kmer traditional costumes.Still wearing today by Kmer villagers in Campuchea.

2.Lethwei

Lethwei (Burmese Boxing). Also known as "Bando"
Lethwei or Lethawae also known as Burmese Boxing and Myanma Traditional Boxing may well be the most brutal and exciting form of kickboxing the world has ever seen. Lethwei is extremely similar to its sibling Muay Thai.If Thai Boxing is the science of 8 limbs then Lethwei is the science of 9 limbs due to the allowance of head butts.
Rules are similar to Muay Thaí allow all takedowns and head butts are allowed. Fights are held in sand pitts, outdours. This is the equivalent of nowdays mix martial arts fought in Ultimate Fighting Championship & Cage fights ect...
Traditionally most fights would go until exhaustion. The boxer can be revived after a knock-out and has the option of continuing.Under the government's organization, the burmese Bando aim to make it a more marketable sport.
Bando is minimalist,no wasted effort. Bando fighters always attack extremely fast with explosives low-kicks and raking punches (Influenced by Indonesian Silat)

3.Muay Boran

Muay Boran or "Ancient Boxing" (Boran is a Thai loan word borrowed from the Khmer language),is the predecessor to Muay Thai. And virtually unknown in the West outside a small circle of practitioners.
Although often not understood by the Thais themselves.

Muay Boran's aim is to help a warrior survive a battle after he has lost his "weapons" (Style known as Krabi Krabong)
Powerful elbows, knees & brutal low-kicks always thrown at full force and speed, with the intent to destroy your opponents instantly at any cost.

Of course naturally,Muay Boran is not accepted to ring sports. It is rare to find a school teaching Muay Boran. The focus on "modern" Muay Thaí is more lucratif option exploitable as a form of income. Today many schools who claim to offer Muay Boran just teach Muay Thaí.Or have no choice to teach Muay Thai to everybody and fighters in Muay Boran or Lerdrit like I do.
Muay Boran is based on techniques which are now forbidden in Muay Thai. This style is widely practiced by virtually every members of the 1er REC Regiment Etranger de Cavalerie (French Foreign Legion).Because 99% of Legionaires of the 1er REC are orientals & 1% are french COs.Who really encourage Muay Boran & Silat(Malysian/Indonesian) into their hand to hand close combat training.
The Muay Boran/Muay Thai has survive in Vietnam,Saigon. It was taught by Grand Master Chai;who later escaped the war after 1975 to France.I am his last student from Vietnam.

4.Muay Thaí

Muay Thai "Thai Boxing" is the Thai name for an indigenous form of martial art practiced in several southeast Asian countries including Campuchea (Cambodia, where it is known as Pradal Serey) and Myanmar (Burma, where it is generally known as Lethwei)
The military style of Muay Thai is called Lerdrit, while today's "Sport Muay Thai" slightly varies from the original art and uses kicks and punches in a ring and with gloves similar to those used in boxing. Muay Thai is referred to as "The Science of Eight Limbs", as the hands, feet, elbows, and knees are all used in full extend.
Around 1774, Nai Khanomtom was captured along with other Thai prisoners at the ancient capital of Ayutthaya.King Mangra was curious to see how the various fighting styles of Burma would deal against other un-armed system. Muay Thai (or Muay Boran) would have to prove itselves to the Burmese art Parma or Lethwei. The King then ask Nai Khanomtom to fight against three Burmeses. The third Burmese was a reputed champion half Tibetan named Kun Lun Yi.Nai Khanomtom defeated them all & is celebrated every March 17 as "Boxer's Day" or "National Muay Thaí Day"
Although Muay Thai is considered by some to be a derivation of a general indigenous martial art style native to southeast Asia ie:Pradal Serey (Khmer Boxing), it was the first to be popularized outside of southeast Asia as Muay Thaí.

Important to know that;Nai Khanomtom have learned his fighting skills from Kmer and Lao Masters. The thai army was trying to destroying all evidences of the great art and to claime it their own.I have wish to see in this life time Kmer,Lao & Thai Masters been in the same room without any dynamic tensions. But on the other hand,it was the thais who promoted this ancient explosif art to the world of un-armed combat. And turned into a professional ring sport.
